Student Support Specialist

Description:

The Student Support Specialist plays a vital role in creating and maintaining a safe, secure, and supportive school environment. This position blends traditional school security responsibilities-such as monitoring buildings, securing doors, and responding to safety concerns-with student-centered support. The Specialist works to build positive relationships with students, staff, and visitors to promote trust, prevent conflict, and encourage a culture of safety and respect.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safety & Security
    • Conduct routine checks of exterior and interior doors, gates, and access points to ensure buildings remain secure.
    • Monitor hallways, common areas, parking lots, and school grounds for safety concerns or unauthorized individuals.
    • Respond to and assist with emergency situations, drills, and crisis management procedures.
    • Maintain clear communication with school administrators, law enforcement, and district operations staff regarding safety issues.
  • Student Connection & Support
    • Develop positive relationships with students to serve as a trusted adult presence in the building.
    • Provide de-escalation support in times of conflict and work to redirect student behavior in a constructive manner.
    • Model and promote respect, responsibility, and school pride through daily interactions.
    • Collaborate with counselors, teachers, and administrators to support student engagement and attendance.
  • Building Operations Support
    • Assist with supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch, and other high-traffic times.
    • Report facility concerns (e.g., damaged doors, lighting issues, safety hazards) to operations or maintenance teams.
    • Document and maintain records of incidents, door checks, and safety concerns as required.
